Buku-Larrhggay Mulka Art Centre
Digital Learning Centre Co-ordinator

Buku-Larrnggay – “the feeling on your face as it is struck by the first rays of the sun (i.e. facing East)”. Mulka – “a sacred but public ceremony.”

The Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre is the Indigenous community controlled art centre of Northeast Arnhem Land, located in Yirrkala, a small Aboriginal community on the northeastern tip of the Top End of the Northern Territory, approximately 700km east of Darwin. Their mission is to sustain and protect Yolngu cultural knowledge in Northeast Arnhem Land under the leadership of community members. The Nelson Meers Foundation supported a Digital Learning co-ordinator to manage the Digital Learning Centre and guide visitors through the Yolngu digital archive.

Why did we fund this project?  Prior to the Digital Learning Centre, there was no public access to computers, the internet, nor libraries in Yirrkala. The centre plays a critical role in preserving the Yolngu culture for future generations, and in creating opportunities for digital education and employment, which will lead to long term social and economic benefits for the Yolngu community.
