PRIMAVERA - Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney
The Nelson Meers Foundation has been supporting the MCA's Primavera exhibition since 2012.
Primavera was initiated in 1992 by Dr Edward Jackson AM and Mrs Cynthia Jackson AM and their family in memory of their daughter and sister, Belinda, a talented jeweller who died at the age of 29. Primavera celebrates the creative achievements of talented young artists who are in the early stages of their careers. It is one of the highlights of the MCA’s annual programme of exhibitions.
Art is ultimately linked with reclamation of identity, story, language and land. Primavera seeks to create a space for social interactions based on the exchange of familiarities - through agreement, disagreement and by negotiation. It provdes a place in which we can think about who we are and how we can transcend borders of difference, to meet together again.
Why did we fund this project? Primavera is a unique opportunity for young artists and curators to work with a major museum. We are seeking to encourage opportunities for young female curators to work in a major public gallery environment and we were particularly inspired by the high level of community engagement with this innovative programme.
Primavera 2016: Young Australian Artists at the MCA Sydney, 29 September-4 December 2016 was the 25th edition. Curated by Emily Cormack.
