Corroboree Sydney
The Rocks Boatshed
Corroboree Sydney (20-30 November 2014) was a celebration of Australia's rich Indigenous culture, featuring leading artists, writers, dancers and musicians showcasing their creativity and sharing stories in over 100 free and ticketed events. The festival featured a unique collaboration of Sydney's premier arts and cultural organisations over 11 days of festivities.
The festival came alive at destinations around the city and harbour foreshore, with Bangarra Dance Theatre, the Australian Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney Opera House, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, State Library of New South Wales and the Art Gallery of New South Wales all presenting tailored programming.
The Nelson Meers Foundation supported the inaugural The Rocks Boatshed. Throughout the ten days of Corroboree the public was invited to celebrate contemporary Aboriginal culture at The Rocks Boatshed through music, literature, talks, storytelling and performance. The Rocks Boatshed was brought to life by the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority as part of their commitment to celebrate Aboriginal life in Sydney.
Why did we fund this project? We are committed to ensuring that the public is able to engage with Indigenous arts and culture in meaningful and authentic ways. An Eora word that has become part of Australia's identity, a Corroboree is a place of ceremony and creative expression; a transformative gathering. Under the artistic direction of Hetti Perkins, Corroboree Sydney aimed to honour that meaning.
