La Biennale Di Venezia (Venice Biennale) 2017 & 2019

Australia has been represented at the La Biennale di Venezia since 1954 by many distinguished contemporary visual artists. La Biennale di Venezia provides Australian artists with critical international coverage, exposing them to key new audiences, markets and contexts.

In 2017, Tracey Moffatt was the sole artist representing Australia at the 57th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale 2017. Tracey Moffatt is one of Australia's most successful artists, both nationally and internationally. Highly regarded for her formal and stylistic experimentation in film, photography and video, her work draws on the history of cinema, art and photography as well as popular culture and her own childhood memories and fantasies.

At Biennale Arte 2019, Angelica Mesiti's exhibition for the Australian Pavilion in the Giardini is a multi-screen installation titled ASSEMBLY. One of Australia's most celebrated and internationally profiled contemporary artists, Angelica Mesiti works across video, performance and installation. Mesiti has developed a practice characterised by large-scale video and sound works. She is known for using cinematic language and performance to explore stories of the individual and the collective.

Why did we fund this project? Having contributed to the redevelopment of the Australian Pavilion in Venice between 2013-2015, the Nelson Meers Foundation is delighted to continue its commitment to showcasing Australian art on the international stage through this prestigious global exhibition in 2017 and 2019.
