Speaking Out of School / documentary

About

Big hART’s production of Speaking Out of School is a documentary telling the story of three teenagers who join a groundbreaking high school program for kids at-risk of family violence.  Adolescence is a complex time in anyone’s life, but these young people are growing up in a rough community where violence is never far away.  With mentors including advocate Rosie Batty, they use art to unpack the social pressures that lead to violence.

Speaking Out of School uses the power of story to show audiences the positive impacts of ‘prevention in action’. The documentary centres the voices of young people in the context of their often-complicated lives, exploring how they strive to break their own cycles of violence and engage with the key themes of prevention – power, control, identity, gender and equality.
