A Universal Symbol
By Emily Simpson
Buckminster Fuller wrote, ‘If you want to teach people a new way of thinking, don’t bother trying to teach them. Give them a tool instead, the use of which will lead to new ways of thinking.’ Labyrinths help us arrive at acceptance of our path and its obstacles. Held by the structure of the labyrinth’s long winding path, we can release what no longer serves and walk our way into the bigger picture. Being a universal symbol, the labyrinth is a gift for uncertain times because it’s a place within which all perspectives find a home. This was demonstrated at the opening ceremony with the blessing of the path by wisdom keepers from 11 different faith traditions. Aunty Ali Golding, Elder of the Biripi Nation, said that day: “The labyrinth invites and welcomes people to walk the path together – it calls them to the land in oneness.”
I’ve recently started a page on Substack, telling the story of my journey to build the labyrinth in Centennial Park. It’s called ‘Paving the Way’. There are weekly posts and you can subscribe for free. Go to https://emilysimpson.substack.com
Sydney Labyrinth hold facilitated walks at the Centennial Park Labyrinth at 9am on the first Sunday of every month. Come and quiet your mind, listen to your heart and remember what it feels like to be in community in a peaceful, gentle way.
On the Fourth Friday of each month, Spiritual Director, Elizabeth Lee welcomes people into the labyrinth at 10am, offering a Gospel reading with a question to ponder while walking. All welcome. The next walk will be on Friday 24th October at 10am. RSVP helpful but not essential.
