Deep Surface: Jemima Wyman at UNSW Galleries in 2027

A free exhibition at UNSW Galleries brings together three decades of work by Australian artist Jemima Wyman, exploring camouflage, collective identity, democracy and the power of dissent.

Presented by UNSW Galleries in partnership with QUT Art Museum, Deep Surface is the first career survey of Los Angeles-based Australian artist and Palawa woman Jemima Wyman.

Spanning three decades of artistic practice, the exhibition brings together drawing, painting, video, performance, sculpture, textiles and collage. Through intricate patterns and vivid colour, Wyman examines how individuals and communities express identity, organise collectively and respond to political and social conflict.

Drawing on feminist theory, protest culture and unconventional ways of thinking, Wyman reimagines camouflage as more than a means of hiding or blending in. Instead, it becomes a way to bear witness, challenge dominant perspectives and imagine new political possibilities.

Her work invites audiences to look beyond the surface and consider how patterns can reveal the connections between individual experience and collective action, and how art can create space for resistance, solidarity and new ways of being together.

Curated by Katherine Dionysius, Deep Surface offers an opportunity to engage with an artist whose practice brings together visual experimentation and political inquiry, encouraging audiences to reflect on the role of art in shaping how we see ourselves and the world around us.
