The Nelson Meers Foundation supported the 2018 reimagining of Sydney Dance Company’s stunning work Frame of Mind. Frame of Mind’s premiere season went on to win all four categories for the 2015 Helpmann Awards including ‘Best Choreography’, ‘Best Dance Work’, ‘Best Male Dancer’, and ‘Best Female Dancer’, and in 2017 toured across Australia, as well as a critically acclaimed tour in the United States, including sell-out performances at The Joyce in New York.
Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela created Frame of Mind which features a dramatic contemporary-classical soundtrack by acclaimed and sought after composer Bryce Dessner. Bryce Dessner, with his band The National performed in January 2018 at the Sydney Opera House, and Bryce visited Sydney Dance Company’s studios. During the visit, Bryce and Rafael reignited their shared dream to perform Frame of Mind with live music on stage. For both artists, they believe the power and impact of live music would bring a new level of performance to the stage, deepening the connection between the music and the choreography. In collaboration with the Australian String Quartet, this will now become a reality.
The SDC, under Rafael’s leadership, is one of the world’s pre-eminent dance companies. We strongly believe in supporting greater opportunities for our premiere artistic companies to create collaborative and innovative work. What a privilege to support the live music component of this work!
