About

Among Equals is a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to connecting artisan weavers from Papua New Guinea with the global market for Bilum, a traditional woven craft.

Through trade, rather than aid, the organisation empowers women in some of the country’s most economically disadvantaged and remote communities, celebrating their creativity while expanding opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

Founded by Caroline Sherman in 2015 in partnership with 20 weavers in Goroka, Papua New Guinea, Among Equals has grown to include more than 4,000 women across the country.

Guided by cultural advisors and community elders, the organisation works alongside weaving communities to support women as artisans, business owners and custodians of a craft passed down through generations from mother to daughter.

The impact extends far beyond individual weavers. Every Bilum bag sold contributes to the livelihoods of an estimated 10 to 15 people within the wider community, creating economic opportunity through trade while helping preserve an important cultural heritage.

At the heart of every piece is a story of creativity, connection and cultural continuity — a living tradition carried forward by the women who weave it.
