Goodnight Sweet Prince

About

A bold and contemporary reimagining of Hamlet, this new Australian production distils Shakespeare’s classic into an intense two-actor performance exploring memory, remorse, mental health, and inherited cycles of violence.

Using fractured time, immersive soundscapes, masks, and layered vocal recordings, the production draws audiences deep into Hamlet’s fractured inner world as past and present collide.

Performed by actors Raj Labade and Jack Twelvetree, who alternate nightly between Hamlet and multiple key roles, the work places youth at the centre of the story in a way rarely seen in traditional productions.

By connecting Shakespeare’s themes with contemporary conversations around anxiety, trauma, and identity, the production speaks directly to Millennial and Gen Z audiences while creating meaningful representation for South Asian communities who are seldom reflected in Shakespearean theatre.

As an independent theatre work, this production champions creative risk-taking and emerging Australian talent.

Why

We are funding this production because it represents bold, independent Australian theatre that brings contemporary relevance and underrepresented perspectives to a classic work. By centring young and diverse artists, the production creates meaningful connections with audiences around mental health, identity, and cultural representation.
