Sidney Nolan Project

About

The Nelson Meers Foundation was privileged to be involved in a 10 year project with the Art Gallery of NSW to augment the Gallery’s collection of paintings by Sir Sidney Nolan.

The works acquired were: Italian Crucifix 1955, Drought Skeleton Carcass 1953, Luna Park 1941, Robbed 1947, Central Australia 1950 and Hare In Trap 1946. These works form part of the expanded and revitalised the Australian Galleries – one of the finest collections of Australian art in the country.

As one of the country’s pre-eminent art museums, the Art Gallery of NSW must have a meaningful collection of works by one of our most significant artists.  As Sidney Nolan himself once said, “In a world that is difficult, hard to get through, music and painting and poetry are a kind of device, maybe even a kind of evolutionary device, which has developed to get us through.”
