The Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) is a collaborative marine research organisation based at Chowder Bay in Sydney. Bringing together four Sydney universities, SIMS works with government agencies and research partners to advance understanding and conservation of Australia’s marine environments.
The Sydney (White) Seahorse Project aims to protect the endangered white seahorse, also known as the Sydney seahorse. Native to Australia’s east coast, this remarkable species has experienced significant population declines due to the loss and degradation of vital marine habitats.
The project combines scientific research with practical conservation measures, including installing underwater habitats known as ‘Seahorse Hotels’, restoring seagrass meadows and breeding seahorses in captivity for release into the wild.
Through habitat restoration, scientific research and innovative conservation approaches, the project aims to support the recovery of wild seahorse populations and develop methods that may benefit other threatened marine species.
