The Final Quarter – documentary

About

This powerful documentary from filmmaker Ian Darling tells the story of the last three years of the career of AFL champion Adam Goodes. Adam Goodes was a champion AFL footballer and Indigenous leader. He publicly called out racism, was named Australian of the Year, was accused of staging for free kicks, and performed an on-field war dance celebration. In the final years of his career, the cheers turned to boos.  Using archival footage only, this film reveals the incidents that provoked heated media commentary and divided the nation.

The film holds a mirror to Australia and is an opportunity to reconsider what happened on and off the football field. It has sparked an outpouring of support for the former Australian of the Year after its nationwide broadcast on Network 10. The AFL Players Association’s Indigenous Advisory Board said: “We want The Final Quarter to be seen by school kids across the country”.

THE FINAL QUARTER premiered to sell-out audiences and standing ovations at the Sydney Film Festival, had six screenings at the Festival and was subsequently broadcast on Channel 10 and WIN.

Why

The Final Quarter has started a nationwide conversation.  The Nelson Meers Foundation supported the Education and Outreach program for the film in order to ensure as many people as possible were able to see the film. Students will also have access to supported resources.  We are keen to ensure the continuation of this conversation within our education system for our future change makers, so all education resources and screening guide materials have been made freely available to every school and registered sporting club in Australia that wishes to screen it.
