The Nelson Meers Foundation is proud to have supported The Idea of Art, an insightful book written by the Gallery’s former Head Curator of International Art, Anthony (Tony) Bond OAM, documenting and revealing the Gallery’s magnificent international collection. It is also a very personal, deeply engaging text, as Tony worked closely with the artists and, in many cases, formed life-long friendships that have allowed a continuing conversation about why art matters.

It is vitally important that one of Australia’s pre-eminent art museums had its significant collection of international art documented by one of Australia’s most respected curators. The book provides an in-depth interpretation of some of the most important artists of the late twentieth century.
