KALDOR PUBLIC ART PROJECTS (KPAP) -
Agatha Gothe-Snape in Residence
Kaldor Public Art Projects (KPAP) are pioneers in the field of public art. They are the first, and longest-running, public art organisation in the world and bring groundbreaking contemporary art, free-of-charge, to the Australian public. Their ambitious temporary art projects inspire new perspectives on everyday experience and extend art into everyday life. Led by founder and director, John Kaldor, they have a proven history of achievement and an established international reputation. Beyond the confines of a set venue or format, all their projects are artist-led.
In 2019, KPAP celebrate their 50th anniversary with a series of significant events, including a major exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW from 7 September 2019 – 16 February 2020.
As part of these celebrations Nelson Meers Foundation is supporting Australian artist Agatha Gothe-Snape for a significant new commission as part of the anniversary. Agatha has spent a year in collaboration with Kaldor Public Art Projects team and has researched the Kaldor Public Art Projects archive in the development of her new work, which will take inspiration from the relational histories of Kaldor Public Art Projects.
Why did we fund this project? The public art that Kaldor Public Art Projects have presented over its 50-year history is to be celebrated. The company is firmly an authority in the contemporary art landscape within Australia. They present artworks in diverse venues and public realm spaces and collaborate with a vast array of peers and partners. Their projects have fostered cultural exchange between the Australian and international arts communities. The free experiences for culture seekers are world class.
Commissioning Agatha Gothe-Snape to develop and present a significant new project as part of the anniversary provides the opportunity for an established and acclaimed, mid-career Australian artist to reflect on the organisation's projects, their significance and to frame its history with a new lens.
Kaldor Public Art Projects 5oth Anniversary events will be held at the AGNSW September 2019 – February 2020.
