Milk Crate Theatre
The Nelson Meers Foundation was proud to have supported Milk Crate Theatre, Australia's leading theatre company dedicated to working with people who have experienced homelessness and marginalisation, with 3 year operational funding.
Milk Crate Theatre works with an ensemble of artists who have experienced homelessness or social marginalisation. Their work embodies the experiences and artistry of the Ensemble and showcases their uniqueness as contemporary storytellers. They are committed to bringing communities together; to work with them, to be experts for them - as they create transformative art that challenges audiences. Milk Crate believes that, together, they can start a constructive debate and work towards an inclusive future. They create theatre that creates change.
"Every now and then something leaps out and wakes you up and makes you realise the transformative power of a live performance... if you ever have the chance to see a Milk Crate show, don't miss it." Central Magazine, 18 August, 2009
Why did we fund this organisation? Milk Crate’s work sits at the intersection between culture and community. It is vitally important that marginalised people within our community are provided with access to the arts so they are given the opportunity to articulate and share their experiences with the broader community. We are all enriched by this exchange.
