Opera by Mary Finsterer
Biographica was an Australian chamber opera co–presented by Sydney Chamber Opera & Carriageworks in January 2017. Set against universal themes, this musical odyssey was a fusion of Renaissance and modern sounds and set within a truly innovative theatrical framework. Biographica propelled audiences into the life and mind of a flawed genius, Renaissance gambler and scholar Gerolamo Cardano, whose ruthless quest for fame, wealth and immortality are themes that resonated as profoundly today as they did 500 years ago.
Composer Mary Finsterer is recognised as one of Australia's most innovative orchestral composers. She is Chamber Music Australia's Chair of Composition at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, Monash University.
Why did we fund this project? We are delighted to be able to support one of Australia's pre-eminent women composers to create a daring original chamber opera. The opportunity to present Biographica at the Sydney Chamber Opera & Carriageworks in 2017 gave a broad national and international audience access to this important work.
