Mitchell Building: Collector's Gallery

The extraordinary collections of the State Library of NSW document the heritage of Australia and Oceania and are one of the state's most valuable assets. By building, preserving and delivering its collections, including today's born digital materials, the Library enables Australians to interrogate our past, understand our present and imagine our future.

The Library's Mitchell building has been a prominent Sydney icon since 1910. Built in four stages between 1910 and 1964 overlooking Farm Cove, the Mitchell is a Sydney landmark and is a treasure house of cultural heritage. As part of the Library's vision to transform the Library into a global cultural destination for all, the Library created a strategic masterplan which saw the beautiful Mitchell vestibule become the prominent entrance to the State Library's new Gallery spaces and Mitchell Reading Room.

The Collector's Gallery, on the ground Floor of the Mitchell Building, is a collaborative space for exhibitions, regularly refreshed using the SLNSW's rich content, and showcases important realia collections.

Why did we fund this project?  The creation of the Collector's Gallery enables SLNSW to showcase and interpret the breadth of the Library's collection and to demonstrate its leadership in innovative interpretations of our cultural heritage. Readers, researchers, students and visitors — both local and international — now have greater access to this much loved Sydney landmark and the extraordinary riches within it.
