Monster Climate Petition

About

The Monster Climate Petition demonstrated the power of collective action, bringing together more than 72,000 Australians to call for stronger national leadership on climate change. Led by 12 prominent Australian women, including Dr Fiona Stanley, the campaign urged the federal government to make meaningful reductions in carbon emissions and to treat climate action as a bipartisan national priority.

Inspired by the historic 1891 Monster Petition, which helped secure voting rights for women in Victoria, the initiative highlighted the enduring role of civic participation in shaping Australia’s future. Through thousands of pen-and-ink signatures collected across the country, Australians sent a clear message to Parliament: protecting our people, land and seas is a fundamental responsibility of government, and decisive action on climate change cannot be delayed.

Why

We supported the Monster Climate Petition because it provided a powerful, democratic way for Australians to call for stronger action on climate change.

By providing access to an advertising campaign in the Australian Financial Review, we helped amplify the petition so it could collect more than 72,000 signatures.

The campaign demonstrated that climate action is not a fringe concern, but a mainstream issue that cuts across communities and political divides. By elevating this message in one of Australia’s leading national publications, we sought to encourage constructive public debate, reinforce the importance of evidence-based leadership, and remind decision-makers of their responsibility to protect Australia’s people, environment and future prosperity.
